Jo is excited to be able to offer acupuncture for pain relief to her Physiotherapy clients. She has been practicing acupuncture for over 10 years and has recently been granted a license for her garden treatment room. Acupuncture is a form of therapy which involves the insertion of fine needles into specific parts of the body. It aims to reduce pain and inflammation and to stimulate the body’s own healing chemicals to aid recovery and enhance rehabilitation.
Acupuncture within physiotherapy is implemented in accordance with clinical and research evidence. Western medical acupuncture was derived from Traditional Chinese Medicine which is an ancient system of medicine which dates as far back as 1000BC. Traditional Chinese Medicine founded the concept of treating specific points along the body where unseen energy pathways could be stimulated with a needle to effect energy (Qi) within the body to support the body back to optimal health.
Acupuncture treatment involves the use of single use, pre-sterilised, disposable needles or varying widths and lengths that pierce the skin at Acupuncture points. Jo will determine the location of the Acupuncture points and choice of Acupuncture points based on her assessment. Several needles may be used at each treatment, and they are typically left in position for 20-30mins before being removed.
Acupuncture can be helpful for a variety of conditions including osteoarthritis, back and neck pain, headaches and migraines, tendinopathies (such as Achilles, tennis elbow and rotator cuff), fibromyalgia and chronic pain. If you would like to know more about acupuncture and whether it could help you as part of your Physiotherapy treatment, please get in touch with Jo.
