Pilates for Lower Back Pain

‘The Pilates method teaches you to be in control of your body and not at its mercy’ – Joseph Pilates

Anyone that has suffered from lower back pain will know that fear of the pain and a lack of confidence can be limiting factor in returning to exercise and managing your back pain. Pilates can be a great form of exercise to restore your confidence and enable you to achieve successful movement, free of pain. The APPI method of Pilates has these philosophies at its heart. I have been teaching APPI (Australian Physiotherapy Pilates Institute) Clinical Pilates for 6 years and regularly see my clients reducing, managing and even overcoming their lower back pain through Pilates. I love how a Pilates class gives you a whole hour to focus on yourself and concentrate on your body and the way you move. When else in our busy lives do we take the time to concentrate on our breathing, think about the quality of a movement or consider the optimal muscle activation as we move? For anyone experiencing lower back pain, to be able to complete an hour of exercise with pain free movement throughout is surely a positive experience? What I love most about APPI Pilates is that these positive movement experiences and pain free movements can then spill over into your life outside of Pilates i.e. how we stand, walk, run, sit etc. Ultimately, Pilates can give you the confidence to enjoy moving again.
